Today I want to speak about modern-day distractions.

 

There was a comedy sitcom series that I had been watching for some time. I would watch it while eating, for comfort, and during my free time. Then one Saturday night, around April, I found myself binge-watching episode after episode. I had not prayed the entire day, nor had I read the Word.

Suddenly, something stirred within me, and I abruptly sat up in bed, realizing how far I had gone. I dramatically exclaimed, “I have been distracted!” It was in that moment that I realized the enemy had been distracting me with all kinds of things, not just the series. Even the busyness of life can become a distraction.

 

Every time I opened social media, I automatically started scrolling without even thinking twice. When, then, do I make time to meditate on the goodness of the Lord and on His Word if every spare moment is spent looking for something to grab my attention until it’s time for the next meaningful task?

 

I believe we can all agree that the enemy’s warfare against us does not always have to be dramatic or supernatural. Sometimes it is found in the ordinary, everyday things we do. Even schoolwork, work, or other responsibilities can slowly drive us away from God if we are not careful. The enemy uses our eye gates to distract us.

 

I knew exactly what I was supposed to be doing in that season of my life, yet I was wasting precious time in comfortable distractions and unknowingly delaying myself.

 

I was recently reading Luke 12, where Jesus emphasizes that we should always be dressed for service and keep our lamps burning so that when the Bridegroom comes, He finds us ready. If we behave like the unfaithful manager mentioned later in Luke 12, who said to himself that his master was taking a long time to return, stopped preparing, and began indulging in worldly pleasures, the master will return unexpectedly. As the Bible says, he will be assigned a place with the unbelievers.

 

Sometimes our lamps burn brightly. However, when we become distracted and stop tending our altars, our light begins to grow dim. We must remain ready at all times, remembering that one day we will give an account,even for how we used our time. Scary, right?

 

Let us continually remind ourselves why we are on this earth. We are ambassadors of the Kingdom of God. We cannot come to earth merely to pursue our own agendas, preserve ourselves, seek comfort, and indulge in temporary pleasures. One day, the Owner of the garden will come looking for fruit, and we must be able to produce good, lasting fruit.

 

Genesis 27:40 says, “…but when you can bear it no longer, you will break loose and throw his yoke from off your neck.”

 

When you honestly audit your life, what distractions are keeping you bound? And are you tired enough, are you determined enough, to break loose and run free?
